Born in the Soviet Union, ballet superstar Mikhail Baryshnikov defected to the West in 1974 while touring with the Kirov Ballet. When be began dancing in New York City, annual ballet attendance leapt from one million to 15 million. Considered the best classical male ballet dancer since Nijinsky, Baryshnikov became even better known when he moved into film, fashion, and TV, even popping up as Carrie Bradshaw's love interest on EM Sex and the City /EM .
