Boyhood buddies William Harley and Arthur Davidson built their first machine in a small shed in Milwaukee in 1901. The company grew steadily until Japanese imports threatened to put it out of business in the 1980s, but a small group of Harley-Davidson executives bought the company and brought it roaring back to life.
