Episode Description

The turbulent story of the music group that rocketed to superstardom in the 60s with such hits as "California Dreamin'" and "Monday Monday." John Phillips, Michelle Gilliam, Denny Doherty, and Cass Elliot combined their folk sound with Beatles-inspired electric pop to land a record deal and start their climb to the top. But the group was ultimately torn apart by success, money, hard drugs, affairs, and ever-increasing excess. Cass died at age 32, John and Denny launched solo careers, and Michelle went into acting. But their music and their lives lived out in the era of "sex, drugs, and rock `n' roll" continue to be legendary.
